Hazards to avoid

There are NUMEROUS foods, plants/flowers and home/garden products that can be potentially FATAL to cats, dogs and other pets. By being aware of which ones pose a danger, you can keep your pet safe, avoid a costly trip to the emergency hospital and potentially avoid a tragedy.

Please keep the following away from pets:

• Coffee & caffeine

• Alcoholic beverages

• Avocado

• Macadamia nuts

• Grapes & raisins

• Yeast dough

• Raw/undercooked meat, eggs & bones

• Xylitol sweetener

• Onions, garlic & chives

Garden and outdoor hazards

• Animal toxins—toads, insects, spiders, snakes & scorpions

• Blue-green algae in ponds

• Citronella candles

• Cocoa mulch

• Compost piles

• Fertilizers

• Outdoor plants & plant bulbs

• Swimming-pool treatment supplies

• Fly baits containing methomyl

• Slug & snail baits containing metaldehyde

Medications (can be lethal, even in small dosages)

• Pain killers (Ibuprofen, all Tylenol tablets/capsules & liquids, including children's Tylenol)

• Cold medicines

• Anti-cancer drugs

• Antidepressants

• Vitamins

• Diet Pills

• Flea products (dog flea medications are toxic to cats)

Cold Weather Hazards

• Antifreeze

• Ice melting products

Holiday Hazards

• Christmas tree water (can contain fertilizers
  & bacteria)

• Electrical cords

• Ribbons or tinsel (can become lodged in the intestines - most often occurs with kittens!)

• Batteries

• Glass ornaments

Household/personal items

• String

• Yarn

• Thread (with & without a needle)

• Dental floss

• Straight pins

• Rubber bands

• Coins

• Jewelry

• Rubber door stoppers

• Plastic pop can/bottle carriers

• Fabric/clothes (which some cats chew)

• Plastic wrap

• Plastic & paper bags with handles

• Fabric softener sheets

• Post-1982 pennies (due to high concentration of zinc)
